Research Alliances at the TUM School of Medicine and Health bring together scientific expertise around key topics of the future. They unite researchers from different disciplines and provide a long-term framework for excellent, focused research. Unlike time-limited research projects, Research Alliances are designed as permanent structures and are firmly integrated into the School’s organizational framework. In addition to the MH Research Alliances, the TUM School of Medicine and Health hosts further research networks and collaborations with different organizational structures and objectives.
The MH Research Alliance for Neurotechnology and Neuroassistive Systems is an initiative of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Klinikum der Technischen Universität München. It brings together clinical neurosurgery, translational neurotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and neuroethics in a focus on restorative neuroscience.
Four axes carry the work. They develop interfaces for sensorimotor rehabilitation after spinal cord injury and stroke, examine communication and higher cognitive functions, combine wearable robotics with neuroprosthetics, and provide the artificial intelligence, data infrastructure, and governance for all of it. In 2025 the first chronic microelectrode interface in Europe for traumatic spinal cord injury was implanted in the neurosurgical operating room.

The TUM Center for Health Promotion and Prevention in Childhood and Adolescence (CHAMPION) was established in October 2022 under the patronage of the Bavarian Minister of Health. The inaugural ceremony was held at TUM`s new Campus in the Olympic Park during the International Summit on Child Health and Well-being. As early as 2020, members of the Department Health and Sport Sciences jointly started to draft the CHAMPION concept in collaboration with members of the TUM Faculty of Medicine, TUM School of Life Sciences, and affiliated stakeholders. Since 2023, CHAMPION is fully integrated into the new TUM School of Medicine and Health, leading research and teaching on all matters related to child and adolescent health promotion and prevention.
The Center for Global Health was founded in 2017 by the Professors Andrea Winkler and Clarissa Prazeres da Costa. The Center for Global Health is based at the medical faculty of TUM and is financed and supported by the Department of Neurology, Klinikum rechts der Isar and the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene at TUM. This collaboration demonstrates the interdisciplinary approach that is taken at TUM and that is vital for the activities of the Center for Global Health.
