The Medical & Health Scientist Program is designed for postdoctoral researchers at the TUM School of Medicine and Health and TUM Klinikum Rechts der Isar who are focused exclusively on research. The goal of this one-year program is to provide targeted support for the academic development of outstanding early-career researchers and to create long-term opportunities for independent research careers.

The programivolves workshops, career development sessions, and various opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange within the TUM Klinikum. Another central component is individual guidance from experienced mentors from various scientific and clinical disciplines. In addition, the program actively promotes networking and collaboration between medical scientists and clinician scientists from different disciplines.

 

Structure
All fellows are supported by an Advisory Committee consisting of an academic mentor and an external mentor. This committee provides support both in carrying out the research project and in planning individual professional development activities. The academic mentor must be designated at the time of application; at the latest, by the start of the program.

Fellows have the opportunity to design a personalized curriculum from a diverse range of professional development courses. The curriculum consists of mandatory components such as regular meetings, an annual retreat, subject-specific progress reports, and seminar series, as well as a portfolio of elective courses. This enables fellows to acquire key skills in a targeted manner that are essential for an individual career as a medical and health scientist.

In designing the course program, special emphasis was placed on the specific requirements of medical and health scientists. The focus is on methodological and personal development, covering topics such as grant writing, external funding acquisition, statistics, artificial intelligence and project management. The program also serves to build a strong network within the scientific community. In this context, active participation in relevant professional conferences is specifically supported through financial funding.

Application
The application period for the 2027 Medical & Health Scientist Program is now open!

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A degree in the natural sciences, sports and health sciences, or psychology; a completed doctoral thesis and submitted dissertation (the dissertation must be attached to the application as a PDF); formal completion of the process and the conferral of a degree are not mandatory
  • To be eligible to apply, the degree must have been earned no more than 8 years ago; time spent raising children and caring for family members is taken into account.

  • At least one publication as first author in a peer-reviewed journal (original research, no case reports).
