INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:
Here you can find General information for international students at TUM Applicants from non-EU countries should inform themselves in advance about the tuition fees.
Applicants who have obtained their qualification for postgraduate studies (i.e. a bachelor's degree) in a country outside of the EU/EEA, must have their documents processed by uni-assist. Academic admission requirements for M.Sc. Sport & Exercise Science:
- a qualified bachelor's degree of at least six semesters obtained at a national or foreign university or a degree of at least equivalent value. There is no requirement as to which subject this degree is in.
Note: The final grade (best graded 140/164/187 credits) of the Bachelor's degree is included in the aptitude assessment procedure. Foreign grades are calculated using the Bavarian formula. Please download the following Excel sheet that is suitable for you, enter your grades and upload it in your TUMonline account when applying. Uploading the document is mandatory. We need the data to calculate the grade with the best modules amounting to 140/164/187 credits (depending on the standard period of study of the Bachelor program). The overall average grade is calculated as the weighted grade point average of the modules.
⇒ 6-semester Bachelor's programs: List of 140 best credits
⇒ 7-semester Bachelor's programs: List of 164 best credits
⇒ 8-semester Bachelor's programs: List of 187 best credits
⇒ Please also have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions for listing the best graded modules - Advanced knowledge in English. Proof must be submitted to the Application and Enrollment Office by the application deadline and cannot be submitted later. Knowledge in German language is not required.
- Evidence of a successfully passed vocational internship (min. 8 weeks in the field of sport science) before starting the master's studies; alternatively, a professional activity in the field of sports science, for whose qualification the Master's degree course contributes, can also be recognized; proof of this must be provided before the start of the course, but no later than five weeks after the start of lectures; The Examination Board decides on the recognition of successfully completed vocational training or an equivalent achievement as practical professional training; if professional internships have already been completed as part of a relevant undergraduate degree course, these are generally recognized. The internship certificate should be submitted by the start of course registration at the beginning of October, as a valid enrollment status is required for registration. The internship certificate cannot be uploaded with the online application, but must be uploaded in the application account with the documents for enrollment after admission has been granted. Please note that the School cannot make any binding assessments regarding recognition in advance. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in B.Sc. Health Science or B.Sc. Sports Science from TUM do not need to submit proof of internship (available in-house).
- Essay. Applicants should include an essay of their Bachelor thesis (300-500 words). If the thesis is not complete at the time of the application or is not required in the bachelor`s program, the essay can instead by a description of the main concept (scientific problem, methods). In the case that an international applicant was not required to write a Bachelor thesis, they should instead instead submit a scientific exposé (300-500 words). The exposé should cover a research project conducted during the Bachelor studies e.g. in one of the courses or during an internship. This exposé should detail a scientific question that is relevant to the field of sport science and by what scientific methods one might use to answer this question. The essay/exposé should meet international scientific standards in form and content, should properly cite outside sources, and should include a declaration that the applicant has written the essay/exposé by him/herself.
- Successfully passing the selection procedure, see Academic and Examination Regulations (FPSO - Readable version from 02.03.2022).
No practical sports aptitude test is required. Since courses involving the application of sports science methods and empirical work may involve maximum cardiovascular and muscular exertion, a medical certificate confirming your athletic ability is recommended.
Information on the aptitude assessment procedure can be found in our Overview: Application and Approval M.Sc. Sport and Exercise Science
Performance assessment (written online exam) 2025:
The performance test is conducted online or alternatively as on campus exam. The dates will be announced at the beginning of next year. The performance test takes place only once per application phase. An alternative date due to vacation or similar is not possible.
There will be one subsequent date later that year. Participation is only possible in justified exceptional cases with written proof.
You can take this aptitude test either in the lecture hall with human supervision or at home with Proctorio supervision. If you choose off campus attendance with Proctorio supervision, there is a one-time cost of $25 to apply for a place in the M.Sc. Sport and Exercise Science degree program.
1. ON Campus Exam:
- Authentication and proctoring is done by human invigilators in the lecture hall.
- For this test you must be present in the lecture hall/seminar room.
2. OFF Campus Exam with proctoring (Proctorio):
- Proctorio will secure your computer, preventing you from accessing sources other than those allowed during the exam.
- For remote exams with Proctorio you need a computer (and software) that meets the necessary requirements and a working webcam. Please refer to: https://proctorio.com/support/requirements
- You can carry out this exam remotely, please assure a quiet environment and stable internet connection.
- Please have an identification document ready to verify your identity.
You will receive a separate email with information how to access the exam course. Please be aware that you need to choose which type of exam you take (on or off campus) and a preparatory exam (test) has to be conducted before the actual exam, so please log onto the exam course as soon as you have access to familiarize yourself with the exam procedure.
Information on how to prepare for the performance assessment can be found in this document:
Aptitude assessment interviews (only in phase 2) 2025:
Calendar week 31-33
This period must be kept free! Requests for appointments will only be considered in justified exceptional cases in advance (deadline: 15th July) with valid reasons and must be supported by written proof. Please send this to aptitude.sto(at)mh.tum.de. Only the following reasons will be accepted:
- Voluntary social/ecological year
- internship
- health condition (examination, therapy)
- other examination dates
- care of relatives
Vacation will not be considered as a reason for an appointment request; corresponding requests will not be processed. As of July 15, requests for appointments in a specific time period are no longer possible.
Time requests for a fixed appointment cannot be considered in advance. These can be expressed in the morning during the technology check on the day of the interview, so you must appear for this in any case. There is no guarantee that requests can be considered.
Invitation to an interview
Applicants will be invited to the interview date by email at least 1 week in advance. Please also check your spam folder in this period. Please note that the invitation is binding and cannot be rescheduled. If you are unable to attend the appointment due to unforeseen circumstances, this must be reported by the end of the following day (midnight) at the latest and documented with written proof. Without written proof, it will not be possible to check whether an alternative date can be allocated.
If you wish to withdraw the application, cancellation is possible up to the scheduled interview date. Please write an informal reply to the invitation email.
Digital conduction of the aptitude assessment interviews
The aptitude (assessment) interviews for the study programs
- M.Sc. Sport and Exercise Science
- M.Sc. Health Science
- B.Sc. Health Science
- B.Sc. Sport Science
will presumably be conducted digitally via video conferencing system. If applicants do not agree to the digital conduct of the aptitude interview, a face-to-face interview will be offered on site. Interviews will generally be conducted using the Zoom video conferencing system at the moment. The consent of the applicants to use Zoom will be obtained. If the applicants do not agree to the use of Zoom, an alternative video conferencing system will be suggested.
If the oral aptitude test is held as an electronic remote test, the participation of the student representatives (otherwise possible with the applicant's consent) virtually via their own device is strongly discouraged for reasons of data protection. This is explicitly not a distrust of our student representatives, but is based on legal considerations: According to the principle of data economy, the circle of those who gain knowledge of sensitive data should be kept as small as possible, since it must be assumed that the examinations take place in the private domestic environment, which is particularly protected by fundamental rights. The university must do everything reasonable to ensure data security. Limiting the number of virtual access points to protect against hacker attacks and ensuring at all times that no third parties besides the examiners enter the virtual room fall into this category.
If the examination is conducted in person or if the entire committee, including the student representative, is in a room and only the candidate is connected virtually, the participation of the student representative is permissible under data protection law on the basis of the candidate's express consent.
