Mentoring & Training Program

With the Mentoring & Training Program for Postdocs, the School of Medicine and Health and the TUM University Hospital have been offering their young scientists a diverse and established support program for 11 years.
Deadline for submitting application documents is 16 February 2025.
The target group of the Mentoring & Training Program are postdocs (scientists and physicians) who aspire to a career in science. As women are underrepresented at higher management levels in university medicine, we are particularly pleased to receive applications from young female researchers.
The Mentoring & Training Program covers a period of 2 years. In addition to mentoring by recognised personalities from the research and clinical fields, all participants receive professional coaching and training in the form of workshops (each 1-2 days). Moderated role model talks and network meetings round off the program.
The mentees have the opportunity to choose their mentor themselves, accompanied by the program coordinator. The mentors and mentees are prepared for their roles through appropriate workshops and counselling services.
The program contains the following components for approx. 15 participants:
- Preparatory one-to-one meeting and support in establishing the mentoring contact
- Target agreement for the mentoring program
- Framework program (kick-off, introductory, interim and closing events)
- Workshop for mentors
- At least 3 one-to-one mentoring contacts
- 5 workshops for participants, e.g. on the following topics: Position and goal setting, career planning, career development through research funding, interviewing and leadership skills
- Optional: 4 individual coaching sessions
- Optional: 10 soft skills training days to choose from
- Additional supervision for mentors if required
- Continuous monitoring and quality management
- Final certificate
Mentoring is an established instrument of personnel development in business, industry and science, which has also proven its worth in the promotion of young scientists in university medicine. At the heart of the programme is the development of a personal relationship between mentor and junior scientist (mentee).
The mentors usually hold a professorship or private lectureship and support the mentees as advisors in all matters of concrete and strategic career planning. The mentees thus gain valuable insights into the unwritten rules of the academic world and become more involved in informal and formal networks and research organisations. The mentors are often also perceived as important role models in terms of balancing work, family and leisure time.
