As the TUM does not accept applications from "freemovers", international exchange students (Erasmus, TUMexchange) must fulfill three requirements in order to participate in an exchange program with us:
- 1st requirement: the exchange agreement:
Your home university has an exchange agreement with the Technical University of Munich in the fields of studies Sports- or Health Sciences. All our partner universities can be found in the Exchange Database of the TUM Global & Alumni Office.
- 2nd requirement: the nomination
Your home university has selected you for exchange studies at the TUM and nominated you.
- 3rd: Your application as an exchange student
If both requirements above are fulfilled, then you can apply to the TUM.
Information about the application procedure, deadlines, etc. is available on the webpage of the TUM Global & Alumni Office.
For your application at your home institution and later at TUM you’ll have to submit a preliminary study program. It is very likely that you will have to change this study plan again, so please consider it only as a first draft.
- Modules
At TUM, Bachelor's and Master's programs are organised in modules. Therefore please indicate modules in your study plan.
A module consists of one or more courses with aligned content and schedules. All TUM modules are identified by codes (module ID) relating to the study program of the School. Our modules usually start with MH or SG (for elder modules). You can see which course(s) belong to the module in the module description.
You are (usually) expected to take all courses of a module because you will take the module exam and not the course exam at the end of your studies. There can be exceptions though.
- Language of instruction
Please be aware that German is the primary language of instruction at TUM. While Bachelor's programs are conducted mainly in German, you'll find that many Master's level modules are available in English. Incoming Bachelor students may enroll in English held Master courses if they fulfill the subject-specific requirements.
We require German and/or English language certification at CEFR level B1 or higher at the time of application.
Please check carefully the module and its description to know if your language knowledge enables you to take the courses. If a module is in Englisch and German, it is also important to check (after your arrival) with the teacher in which language the exam will be held. In some exceptional cases, it may be possible to take only the exam of the course which was held in English.
- Course selection
We recommend you to take at least 20 ECTS per semester. Exchange students must choose 60% of the courses at our Campus (module numbers starting with "MH" or "SG"). Courses at other Schools can be taken if there is no overlap in the timetable, if geographical distance allows and the subject requirements are fulfilled.
- List of courses likely to be offered during summer semester and winter semester
The links lead to the list of modules as well which are likely to be offered during the next semesters as the module descriptions. You will find there the information about the language of instruction, the number of ECTS etc. Please note that minor changes to this list may occur.

- list for the winter semester 2026/27
- Additional courses in English
In addition to the courses offered by TUM you may also take courses of the "vhb" - the virtual bavarian university. Lecturers from 36 universities in Bavaria develop and conduct courses, which are available free of charge to all students from the member universities. Some are held in English.
Finding a room in Munich can be a problem, especially at the beginning of the winter semester in October and November. The majority of the approximately 150,000 students in Munich live in private rooms, shared apartments, or flats. Less than 10% live in student residences, most of which are managed by the student union "Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern" (about 10,000 places), but some are also managed by other public or private institutions. In the latter case, interested students apply directly to the residences.
Exchange students cannot apply directly for student union dormitories, as the waiting times for a room are 1-4 semesters, depending on the dormitory.
Neverthless the Student Union provides the TUM Global & Alumni Office with a (quite) limited number of places in student dormitories, which are primarily reserved for participants of the TUMexchange mobility program. Erasmus incoming students can also apply for it, but the probability of getting a room is low. In all cases you have to indicate it in your move on online-application.
The montly rent of the rooms of the Student Union is between approx. 400 and 600 €, meanwhile on the private market the rent for a room varies from about 600 € to about 1.000 Euro, depending on size, location, equipment etc.
Please note: Do not transfer money from abroad for deposits or advance monthly rent unless you are 100% sure that the room you are renting actually exists! There are unfortunately many scammers out there!
On these websites you will find information on how to search a room:
- Since the course registration period at our Campus is very early (July for winter term and January/February for summer term) you will not be able to do it during the regular period. (Exception: Modules belonging to the 1rst semester B.Sc. degree or 1rst semester M.sc. degree or lectures without seminar groups)
- We will therefore reserve spots for you in the courses of the modules which have been agreed on at the time of your application. We will proceed to the formal registration in TUMonline together with you after your arrival.
- If, for any reason, you want to change your course selection at your arrival, you will need to contact the teachers of these courses. If they agree that you join their classes, they will enroll you.
You will take part in the activities of the Peer Program. The idea is that students from higher semesters, known as tutors, support new students during their first months and serve as contact persons for questions about studying, as well as student and leisure life in the city of Munich. Naturally, there are also joint activities.
The first meeting always takes place at the beginning of the semester.
- Additional social and sports events are organized by the student council (Fachschaft). You can either visit the student council office on campus in person or follow their Instagram account.
- In addition, there are activities offered by the central International Office, the TUM Global and Alumni Office, and the student organization ESN TUMi Munich. You can find all information and activities on this website. Do also subscribe to the newsletter, which regularly informs you about activities, local cultural events, and special highlights.
- If you want to join sports courses take a look at the offers of ZHS (Central University Sports).
- Exams at the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park take place at the end of the semester (February in winter term / July-August for summer term). The exams are module exams and not courses exam, so the content of all courses of a module will be examined (see above section)
- Exchange students have to register for the exams of all modules they wish to have grades/ECTS for, including from other schools and the TUM Language Center. This is not an automatic process! For that, you need to login in your TUMonline account.
- The period for exam registration is published on the website “Current information on the degree programs”. In winter term it is usually from November till January, in summer term usually from May till July. Don’t miss it!
It is best to register for exams via your study tree. You can find further information on how to register for exams in the TUM wiki
- You will also find the results of the exams in your TUMonline student’s account.
Exam results are published around March/April (winter term) and August/September (summer term) in your TUMonline account. If for a very good reason you urgently need them earlier, you can contact us and will do our best to help.
Re-enrollment / Extension of student status
- If you have already been nominated by your home university for more than one semester:
Student enrollment is always valid for only one semester, therefore you must re-register by the following deadlines:
August 15 – to continue in the winter semester
February 15 – to continue in the summer semester
This also means that you have to pay the semester fee to maintain your enrollment
Important: Failure to re-register by the deadline may result in exmatriculation!
- If you want to stay beyond your initial nomination:
To extend your stay, TUM Global & Alumni requires confirmation from both your home university and from us.
You will also have to pay the semester fee again.
Course registration
- Since you are already at TUM and have a TUM ID you will have to register for the courses of your 2nd semester by yourself.
- The period for registration for modules/courses is published on the website “Current information on the degree programs” . For Summer Term it is usually End of January/Beginning of February. Don’t miss it!
- There are different ways to register for courses
Through your study tree
Through the module description
Through the application “Courses”
We advise you to register through your study tree, so you can easily see all courses that belong to the module you chose and how many ECTS the module has.
If you need an official confirmation of your stay at TUM, please send the form which your home university gave you to international.sh.sto(a)mh.tum.de
- Day of arrival: it is the date of your first academic activity at TUM, e.g. participating in a welcome meeting or the first class
- Day of departure: it is the date of your final academic activity at TUM, e.g. end of courses, last examination, etc.
Transcript of records
All TUM students, also the incoming exchange students, can print out their transcript of records (grade report) using TUMonline.
This is how it works:
1. Log in to your TUMonline account
2. Select Transcript in the area “exams”
3. Select Print Grade Report to produce an official Transcript of Records
The grade report is valid without signature and stamp. If nevertheless your home university asks for a signed/stamped transcript of records, please contact international.sh.sto@mh.tum.de as soon as all of your exam results are published in your TUMonline account.
Please do also get in touch with us if in exceptional circumstances, for example if your grades do not appear, or appear too late, you need some help with your grade report.
